Beacon Doulas

Your guide before, during and after childbirth.
Servicing families in the Hudson Valley, NY area.
What is a doula?

A doula provides emotional and physical support to expecting mothers and their partners during labor and childbirth. As your doula, I act as your advocate, supporter, friend, coach, nurturer and guide.

When a doula attends a birth, studies have shown that the labor is shorter and has fewer complications.  Babies born to mothers who use doulas are healthier and breastfeed more easily.

Postpartum Care

Did you know that after having a baby, your job as a mom is to bond with your new baby and get to know each other?  But what about all of that laundry, meals to cook, kids to take care of, and, oh yeah a shower might be nice.  A visit from me as your postpartum doula can help with some of these once basic chores (and now it seems like they will never get done!).  I can help with breastfeeding support, baby wearing instruction, cook meals, clean the house, hold the baby while you shower, prepare a bath for you, play with the big brother or sister, pick up things from around town… Anything that will make your first few days and weeks easier as a new mom, I can help with.  Maybe you just need someone to talk to.  Someone who knows what you’re going through and won’t judge you.  You can book me in 4-hour blocks of time. It’s okay to ask for help. You deserve it.

What would having a doula be like?

As your doula, before the birth, I encourage you to think about what your ideal birth would look like for you and your partner. Using your intentions and wishes, we draw up your “Birth Wishes” which states what you would like and not like during your labor.

During labor, I provide you with physical support to make your labor and delivery more manageable. This could be massage, techniques to relieve back labor, gentle touches to relax you, or helping you move into optimal birthing positions for the baby.

A doula provides emotional support; encouraging you, advocating for you, being your friend and believer, and helping your partner be the best birth partner he or she can be for you.

A doula provides knowledge by helping translate information your doctor gives you, and presents options to consider when given choices to make.

I stay with you during your labor, through your birth, and up to 2 hours after the baby is born to help you settle in with your new baby and establish breastfeeding.

In our postpartum visit, I help you recall your birth experience, often filling in the gaps when time escapes the mother, as so often happens.

About Me

I’m a MaternityWise trained labor and postpartum doula. I was inspired by the birth of my first child, my daughter Edie, to help serve other pregnant and laboring mothers as a doula. I live in Beacon, NY, a fantastic place to raise children and be part of a tight-knit community. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband, John, for 5 years, and we share our home with our daughter, a fat cat, and a gentle dog.
